Panmure's People

The population of Panmure, which includes the Census Area Units of Panmure Basin, Tamaki, Mt Wellington North and South, Hamlin, Ferndale and Ellerslie North was 31,530 as measured by the 2001 census. This represents 9% of Auckland city's total population.

This is a growth of 5% since 1996 and is on top of a growth of 13% between 1991 and 1996.

However with the recently approved development plans for Panmure, including the development of the Mt Wellington quarry site, the population in the immediate area adjacent to Panmure is expected to leap to in excess of 40,000 by 2010.

Approximately one third of the population (33%) are aged under 20, another third (32%) are aged between 20 and 39, whilst those aged between 40 and 64 make up 31% of the population with those over 65 accounting for some 6%. (Note: 2001 Census - figures add up to over 100% due to rounding).

Over the last 15 years the ethnic make-up of Panmure has changed to be truly multicultural.
The 2001 Census shows the following make-up:

There are a total of 11,760 dwellings in the Panmure Catchment with an average of just under 3 persons per household.

Mean incomes in the Catchment at $49,992.00, is slightly lower when compared with Auckland City mean household incomes but favourable with a nation wide comparison. Rent at $172, an increase of 4% between 1996 and 2001, was well below the City mean of $233.

In June 1999 the average house sale price was $248,735.00. However in the intervening period, house prices in Panmure have not only kept up with the dramatic increase in house prices Auckland wide. They have been slightly ahead of the average - recognising the growing interest in Panmure due to its location and community spirit.
